No Link Found Between Cell Phones and Cancer…Again

I hope that someday, we will all look back on the whole cell phone/cancer idea and laugh.

Sadly, its not funny yet.

Despite persistent claims by a relative few, research has repeatedly shown that there is no evidence to support a link between cell phones and cancer.

Yet another study (well, and update of an earlier study) has once again found no link between cell phone use and brain cancer.

The study, which is open source, is published on the British Medical Journal website and entitled: “Use of mobile phones and risk of brain tumours: update of Danish cohort study”

By looking at over 350 000 cell phone users over the course of 17 years, and studying the rates of tumors of the central nervous system, the study found that

There was no indication of dose-response relation either by years since first subscription for a mobile phone or by anatomical location of the tumour—that is, in regions of the brain closest to where the handset is usually held to the head.

The study further concluded

The extended follow-up allowed us to investigate effects in people who had used mobile phones for 10 years or more, and this long term use was not associated with higher risks of cancer. Furthermore, we found no increased risk in temporal glioma, which would be the most plausible tumour location if mobile phone use was a risk.

So there was no correlation between the rate at which people use cell phones and tumors, nor was there a relationship between the side of the head the phone is held and the location of the tumors.

Will this sway the unbelievers? Of course not. But sooner or later people just can’t deny science anymore…right?

  1. I’m amazed that everybody worries so much about cellular radios (mobiles) but nobody ever mentions WiFi. They’re basically the same idea, but WiFi usually is a lot closer to you and operates at a much higher power, so it’d have a higher chance of affecting you.

Anyway, I don’t think either of them are dangerous. If they are, I’m screwed :)

Great article Ryan, I really enjoy reading it and hope you post again regularly. I have to show this to my parents, urgently! I love the picture you added on it.
I’m still trying the mentioned radiation protection case on my cell phone, which my mother forced me to use because she believes blindly that cell phones cause some sort of cancer or degeneration on brain cells… at least it looks cool…
